I need your help, Luke. She needs your help. I’m getting too old for this sort of thing. She must have hidden the plans in the escape pod. Send a detachment down to retrieve them, and see to it personally, Commander.

Training Workshop Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health

FOR PASTORS AND TEENAGER TEACHERS.

BACKGROUND OF THE TRAINING.

YCP conduct workshops, seminars, and conferences on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive health for church teenagers and their leaders. YCP ‘s work with the church is based on the fact that religion is a key factor of influence in adolescent sexual and reproductive behavior including contraceptive use, the onset of sexual activities, adoption and use of family planning methods, male domination, abortion, abstinence and mutual fidelity.

In addition, many Christian parents do not embrace sexuality education because they think it will lead to increased sexual promiscuity among young people. However, the report from World Health Organization and other UN agencies show that sexuality education does not lead to increased sexual promiscuity among young people, rather, it brings about delay in sexual activities among teenagers. While it is true that the church has done creditably well in guiding our young ones to the Lord, the capacity of church leaders need to be strengthened to be able to deal with young people sexual and reproductive health. In other words, YCP trains church leaders so that they can combine their spiritual guidance with the promotion of adolescent sexual and reproductive health in their churches.

Objectives of the Training

  • To sensitize pastors and teenagers’ teachers on the reproductive health needs and problems of adolescents
  • To train pastors and teenagers’ teachers on how to approach reproductive health issues freely without any inhibitions with their youths
  • To equip them with adequate and sincere information on adolescent sexual and reproductive health issues
  • To train them on counseling skills in adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

Achievement of the Training

  • One of the achievements of the sensitization/training workshops was that many of the pastors and teenagers’ teachers embraced and become interested in adolescent sexual and reproductive health issues.
  • The trained leaders also made commitments to start implementing the programs in their respective areas and parishes.
  • The pastors who participated in the training programme also made recommendations for more of their colleagues to be trained thereby getting more and more church leaders to be involved in addressing adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
  • These training also helped to forge a closer partnership between the church and YCP.

YCP and the trainees met regularly to monitor the progress of activities and to share ideas, information, and knowledge. Such regular meetings also provided opportunities for YCP to evaluate her work with the church and to reinforce areas of strength and to improve areas of weakness.
