Peer education

Is a central component of Youth Care Projects program. Youth Care Project adopts peer education as an approach to helping young people adopt responsible behavior. Here, young people are trained on reproductive Health and equipped to disseminate the information to their peers since they are more comfortable talking with themselves.

This program is for both in – and out-of-school youths aimed at empowering them to address health and development issues among themselves.  The emphasis is on training Youth Peer Educators who in turn train their peers. Through this program, further awareness is created about the centre-based programs and activities so that more and more youth can participate and be able to access services available at the centers.



The project also built the capacity of young people in seven schools to become peer educators. The process began in June with the mobilization and screening of potential PEs from the seven schools where the teachers and PTAs were trained from.

Letters were written to the schools to request for interested students as PEs. The list was collated by the trained teachers in the schools and submitted to the project. Over sixty students per school indicated interest! It was an overwhelming experience. This was followed by a screening exercise which took two months to complete (June and July). Six staff of the organization conducted the screening exercises in the schools.

A total of 120 students out of over 300 that indicated interest scaled through the screening process. They were drawn from JSS 1-3 and SSS 1-3 classes and having met the following criteria: Intelligent, friendly, loved by peers, eloquent, organized, active and lively, well-mannered, acceptable by peers, teachable and humble.

The successful candidates were informed and the training for PEs was scheduled for September 19-24, 2004. They were asked to inform their parents.

Youth Centre Programmes

Various activities were carried out at the youth center. These included youth friendly services, health care services for the community, health and family life information and recreational facilities.

Activities include lectures, video film shows, discussion, counseling on adolescent issues and general health issues, in and outdoor games.

The first set of activities that took place at the inception of the project were recreational activities. The purpose was to draw the attention of the young people to the center and create awareness about the other activities they could benefit from. This strategy was very effective because they started coming to play games (indoor and outdoor), socialize and read the newspapers.

Family life Education (FLE)

FLE is one of the youth development activities put in place by the project. This is being integrated into the recreational activities for the purpose of engaging them in the acquisition of vital life skills needed to live a decent and fulfilling life. Topics taught included Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health issues, Personal Skills, Interpersonal Relationships Planning Our Families wisely, Consequences of Unplanned Family, Drug Abuse, Dating, etc.
